Arrows And Bows

In England, Wales and Scotland, adults aged 18 and over can generally purchase and own a crossbow without a licence. Northern Ireland has separate crossbow legislation, including restrictions on sales to under-18s.

Crossbows must be used responsibly and lawfully. In the UK, crossbows are primarily intended for recreational and target shooting, while hunting animals with a crossbow is prohibited. Additional restrictions apply to carrying crossbows in public.

Always ensure you have a safe, suitable location for shooting and comply with the laws applicable to your area.

This depends on your circumstances. You must consider safety, boundaries, the risk of a bolt leaving your property, nuisance and any applicable local restrictions. You should only shoot at a suitable target with a secure backstop and a controlled shooting area.

Check that the club or range accepts crossbows and confirm its safety rules before visiting. Transport the equipment securely and follow the venue's instructions.

No, you do not currently need a licence to purchase or own a crossbow in the UK, including England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, provided you meet the legal age requirements.

However, crossbow ownership and use are subject to certain restrictions, including a minimum purchasing age of 18 and laws governing their safe and lawful use.

Some models may be suitable for adult beginners when used with proper instruction, appropriate protective equipment and a safe shooting setup. Read the manual and understand the safety mechanism before use.

The best beginner crossbow depends on your experience, budget, preferred style and available shooting space. Look for a model with clear instructions, suitable safety features and readily available compatible accessories.

Pistol crossbows are generally more compact, while full-size crossbows usually have a larger stock and limb assembly. Compare the manufacturer's specifications and check that the intended use and accessories are appropriate.

Recurve crossbows use limbs that curve away from the archer at their tips. Compound crossbows use a system of cams and cables. Their designs affect handling, maintenance and the type of replacement components required.

A recurve bow stores energy in its limbs and has no compound cam system. A compound bow uses cams and cables to alter the draw characteristics, often reducing the holding effort at full draw.
